Critically-acclaimed album DAMN by critically-acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar is aiming to be the biggest debut of 2017 so far. Music industry insiders are predicting the album will have debut numbers at approximately 500,000 album equivalent units. The reporting would be for the week ending April 20th, 2017.
With the current front-runner – Drake’s “More Life” – at 505,000 units, Kung Fu Kenny –
who by no means makes pop music – might be able to out-do the Canadian pop/rap star. Drake’s album earned that number for the week ending March 23, 2017.
According to Billboard.com:
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new May 6-dated Billboard 200 chart (where DAMN. will likely debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 23.
What’s more is that DAMN is also looking at around 300,000 traditional album sales in it’s first week as well, beating our Drake’s More Life by 75,000 units. But to earn the biggest traditional sales numbers, Kendrick will have to beat out Ed Sheeran’s Divide which sold 322,000 copies it’s first week. Although not that far off, it is not as close a gap as Kendrick faces with Drake in terms of album equivalent units.
If Kendrick achieves the feat, it will be his third leader of an album on the Billboard Hot 200 charts. It’s a great week to be a fan of Hip-Hop, the culture.
