Last year’s Latin smash “Despacito” has become the very first Spanish-language song to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. The song was already the most viewed video on YouTube, amassing over 4 billion views on the platform.

The Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee song was released in January of 2017 and released by Universal Music Latin. It quickly gained popularity and momentum and went on an unprecedented rise, smashing records all along the way.

It became so popular, even Justin Beiber wanted to step in.

‘Despacito’ was critically praised for its fusion between Latin and urban rhythms.  Beyond that, the charismatic lyrics and delivery put the song on a meteoric trajectory.   Those ingredients became world-famous with a remix version featuring Justin Bieber, essentially lighter fluid on an already blazing track.
