The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced yesterday morning (January 24).
La La Land dominates with 14 nominations including best actor, actress, director and picture. It currently ties records held by Titanic and All About Eve. It will have to win in 12 of the 14 categories in order to break the record of oscar wins for a single movie.
In terms of diversity, these nominations have nailed it. You can call it Oscars Not So White.
People of color have received a number of nods: Denzel Washington is nominated for lead actor in Fences, Mahershala Ali and Dev Patel for supporting actor in Moonlight and Lion, respectively, Ruth Negga in the lead actress category with Loving, and Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) were nominated in the best supporting actress category. Moonlight‘s Barry Jenkins was also nominated for best director.
The 2017 Oscars will take place on Feb. 26 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and will air live on ABC at 5:30 p.m. PT.
