An internal memo from Apple obtained by Variety reportedly shows that Apple Music now has 40 million subscribers to it’s streaming service. Just a month ago that number was 38 million, meaning the runner-up in the streaming wars is actually out-growing Spotify, the leader.
The internal memo was writter by Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services. Of the reported 40 million users, however, 8 million are on a 90 day free trial of the service.
In addition to the new numbers, Apple also announced the promotion of Oliver Schusser to VP of Apple Music and International Content.

With Apple for 14 years, Schusser will relocate to California from the UK where he led Schusser led iTunes, Apple Music and app teams in 38 international offices. He was reportedly instrumental in Apple’s recent purchase of Shazam.
