The smash hit of 2017 – Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” – has officially surpassed PSY’s monster hit “Gangnam Style” to become the second most viewed music video on YouTube. The anthem currently has 2,935,969,543 views putting it right under Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” which has 2,982,541,643 views.
Why is that so interesting? Despacito only debuted on YouTube on January 12 of this year – less than 7 months ago. Khalifa’s track has been out for over 2 years and just now beat out PSY’s Gangnam Style track this month. Gangnam Style had been the top contender for years. At this rate, the Fonsi + Daddy Yankee collab may soon take the top spot. See You Again better watch the throne of it’s possible short-lived reign.
Aside from this huge accomplishment, Despacito has been making waves for a while now. Last April the song reached Diamond status from RIAA and also became the first Spanish song to shoot up the Billboard Top 100 since Macarena in 1995. And Macarena had a whole corny dance craze backing it up.
About Despacito, Digital Music News reports:
The single’s success on YouTube reflects the growing strength of the Latin music market in the United States. Paid subscriptions have attributed to the genre’s rise. In 2015, paid subscription streaming for the Latin market only generated close to $28 million. Last year, revenues grew 89% year-over-year to $52 million. On-demand ad-supported streaming revenues also grew 45% to $34 million.
